DriftRig Fishing Report

🎣 DriftRig Fishing Report — Late July Edition

Date: July 25
Next Report: Early August
🔥 River of the Week: Jefferson River – The dry fly game is ON.

🌡️ Current Conditions

Montana’s summer heat is peaking, with daytime temps soaring into the 90s. Water temps are rising fast, and Hoot Owl restrictions are in full effect across much of the state. Early morning missions are your best bet — and a stream thermometer might just be your new best friend.

📍 Featured Waters

🎯 Jefferson River

Status: River of the Week
Bite: Consistent dry fly eats in the early mornings and again at dusk. Look for subtle sippers along grassy banks and tailouts.
Go-To Flies: Purple Haze (#14–16), Black Ants, Chubby Chernobyls
Note: Low and warm downstream — fish fast and release quick.

🎣 Below Hauser Dam

Flows: Stable and clear
Bite: Nymphing is productive mid-morning, and early light brings streamer chasers.
Go-To Flies: Zebra Midge, Perdigon nymphs, Thin Mint buggers
Pro Tip: Try swinging small streamers just before sun-up for aggressive hits.

🪨 Boulder River (Jefferson Co.)

Conditions: Cold up top, bathwater below
Bite: Sporadic surface activity with caddis and terrestrials — tight casts pay off.
Go-To Flies: Elk Hair Caddis, Parachute Ants, Micro Chubbies
Note: Watch for fish holding tight to undercut banks and pocket water.

🌲 Blackfoot & Little Blackfoot

Conditions: Mornings only — Hoot Owl in effect
Bite: Tricky but rewarding. Look for slower foam lines and shaded seams.
Go-To Flies: PMDs, Yellow Sally, Hopper-dropper with a small PT nymph

🧠 Drift Tips

  • Start Early: Fish between 5–10 AM to avoid warm water stress.

  • Go High: Alpine lakes and spring creeks offer cooler temps and fewer people.

  • Land Fast: Keep your fights short — anything over 68°F stresses trout.

  • Keep 'Em Wet: Limit air exposure and skip the grip-n-grin if water temps are high.
