Montana Fly Fishing Hatch Guide: What’s Hatching & When
Montana’s rivers are alive year-round, and knowing what’s hatching can make or break your day on the water. Here’s a quick breakdown to help you match the hatch and hook into more fish.
Winter & Early Spring (Jan–Mar)
Black Midges and Capnia are your cold-weather staples. Tiny bugs, big rewards.
Come March, keep an eye out for Nemoura and Blue Wing Olives starting to pop.
Spring into Early Summer (Apr–Jun)
Things heat up with Skwalas, Western March Browns, and the famous Mother’s Day Caddis.
Salmon Flies and Green Drakes take center stage in June — big bugs, aggressive eats.
Summer Hatches (Jul–Aug)
It’s terrestrial time: Ants, Beetles, Hoppers, and even Crickets.
Golden Stones, Yellow Sallies, and PMDs keep the action going strong.
Late Summer into Fall (Aug–Oct)
Trico Tan Caddis start stacking up, and Spruce Moths show up in select areas.
Don’t forget the small-but-deadly Tan Midge — it fishes well into October.

Pro Tip: Keep an eye on river temps, local hatch reports, and don’t be afraid to turn over a rock or two. Sometimes the trout write their own rules.
